The Med Mark
The Mediterranean Food Alliance (MFA) is a coalition of health professionals, scientists, chefs and food companies who have joined together to educate consumers about healthy, traditional Mediterranean food, drinks and products.
The Med Mark is a postage-stamp sized symbol portraying an image of an amphora (a traditional Mediterranean pottery jug). This symbol is designed to help shoppers quickly identify healthy foods, drinks and products that support the Mediterranean diet.
The Mediterranean diet is considered to be one of the healthiest diets around. A pyramid was developed to show what foods should feature in your diet including: fresh fruit and vegetables, beans, nuts, cheese, yogurt, bread, pasta, fish and lean meat. Good fats such as Olive oil are also a key part of the pyramid.
All products that bear the med mark contain:
- 0g of trans fat
- Less than 4g (1 teaspoon) of added sugar
- No more than 8% of total calories from saturated fat
- Less than 480mg of sodium (for individual foods) or 600mg (for meal type products)
